Watch Manager Jim Green, Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service
Before joining the Fire and Rescue Service my career was in forestry, beginning in the New Forest with the Forestry Commission after leaving school. I subsequently trained as a Forest Manager in Cumbria and experienced various aspects of forestry both in the private and public sector before moving to Australia for a season as a first attack forest firefighter with their Forestry Commission. I returned to the UK in the summer of 1996 and joined Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service.
Serving on a fire station that dealt with many animal rescues was an added interest for me because I had grown up living and working around large stock and this was an instinctive skill which proved invaluable when attending incidents. Due to the inherent danger surrounding these situations, my colleague Anton Phillips and I were initiators of the countries first Animal Rescue Specialists, fire officers with farming backgrounds who could use their skills to equip and train firefighters to deal with these incidents safely and effectively. Little did we know the impact this small team would have over the coming years.
I am currently employed as the only fulltime animal rescue specialist in the British Fire Service. My role involves training Vets and Firefighters nationally, attending operational incidents in Hampshire and helping to improve levels of training and equipment across the country through the Chief Fire Officers Association National Animal Rescue Practioners Forum.
One of the most fulfilling aspects of my job has been my association with BEVA. Participating in BEVA Congress, establishing trauma training for Vets and Vet students, helping to initiate the Emergency Services Protocol and having the opportunity to travel to Turkey with Prof. Slater to train vets and firefighters has been an amazing experience which above all has provided tangible results by improving the safety of Vets, Firefighters and the public whilst increasing the viability of animals rescued which in turn helps sustain livelihoods.
